It has been my privilege to meet Bryan Stevenson and to support his organization, Equal Justice Initiative. His book Just Mercy has brought global attention to the work of EJI, which has won the release of innocent people wrongly convicted and won new trials for those (including children as young as 13) unfairly sentenced. More recently EJI has launched an education initiative to confront the legacy of racial inequality and injustice in the U.S. “We are determined to deepen the national discourse about the legacy of slavery, racial terror and segregation” their annual report states. Based in Montgomery, EJI shines a bright light on places and practices too long hidden or ignored.
