Suffocation by Design: The Story of America’s Newest Execution Method is a sweeping, unsparing book from our priest, founder and the closest eyewitness to two of the eight nitrogen executions that have happened, The Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood — it is a work that tears away the clinical language surrounding nitrogen hypoxia and forces us to look at what is actually happening inside the execution chamber.

Alongside the book, we are also releasing a short documentary, “Suffocation by Design” by acclaimed documentarian Joel Fendelman, built to do what words alone sometimes cannot: make the invisible visible.

Together, these two works are a reckoning. Nitrogen hypoxia has been packaged as progress, sanitized by bureaucracy and normalized through silence. We refuse that silence. We are here to name what is being done, who is doing it and what it costs every one of us to look away.

At the launch, Rev. Dr. Hood and special guests will read from the book, share their testimonies and screen the documentary. We will also announce the commencement of a national book tour — a rolling act of witness and resistance, taking the horrors of this conversation into local communities that need to hear it.
