Call to Action- How to Help During the SNAP Benefits Loss of Funding

While food insecurity is an ongoing concern, with the recent cut to SNAP benefits funding, it is even more critical at this time. Many wonder how they can help. Here are some actions that can be taken, and time is of the essence.

1. Food Bank Support

In light of developing uncertainties surrounding SNAP/EBT benefits in November, the Food Bank of East AL is suggesting we donate as generously as we can to meet community needs in our area. Funds can go further when the Food Bank can buy in bulk at wholesale pricing.,

Ms. Martha Henk, Executive Director of the FBEA, in communication with AUUF Social Action Chair, shared the following items are still the most needed:

• Proteins

• Canned meat

• Canned fish (e.g. tuna or salmon)

• Canned vegetables

• Canned fruit

• Canned soup

• Dry pasta

• Breakfast items (including cereal)

• 100% fruit juice

• Paper and personal products (e.g., toothpaste, soap and toilet paper)

Packaged food donations must be in the original packaging, unexpired, and unopened. Fresh produce donations must be unspoiled and undamaged.

2. SNAP Contingency Funds

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins so far has refused to release SNAP contingency funds to help cover November benefits. We need your help to convince the USDA to reverse that decision and prevent suffering for millions of people.

Please take a minute today to email Secretary Rollins’ office to demand that she release the money needed to fund November SNAP benefits in full for all eligible participants. Time is of the essence, so please reach out today.
